Why are academics (lecturers) not getting paid by journals for publishing their articles?

Academics or lecturers as they are mostly known, are behind the most exciting technological advancements we are enjoying today. But, guess what? They are the least paid, especially in Nigeria.

Yes, Surprising, huh?

One more surprising fact is that they published their hard-earned findings for free, and the journals (publishers) made millions of dollars out of it. Worldwide academic publishing industry sales amount to more than $19 billion.

It may be interesting to ask, why are the journal not paying them for publishing their works, meanwhile they are making millions of dollars out of the published articles?

Academics work for pleasure and prestige. What I mean is, their work, teaching, and most importantly research to better our world is humanitarian.

Research and publications are not about money, but wait, I know you might ask why can't they have both - the money and the prestige?

To answer you straight, because it is not about money

I hope this answers your curiosity as to why academics are not being paid by journals for publishing their works.

Don't forget to share with other academics and similar minds. Thank you
